Conflict is natural, and, if dealt with skillfully, leads to growth, creativity and meaningful change. Healthy systems address and resolve conflict constructively. Students at the end of the fourth grade are invited to apply to become a member of Riderwood's Peer Mediation Team. About 8 to 10 students are selected from the many applicants. These students begin training in the fall of their fifth grade year. These students are trained in the skill of mediation and work with the students at Riderwood to solve their problems in a win-win situation. These life skills empower students to solve their own problems through improved communications, problem solving and critical thinking. Through the process of mediation, students learn to accept differences, to capitalize on individual and group strengths, and to make creative decisions based upon the best interest of all. |
