Helpers

Art Helpers

Morning and afternoon Art Helpers have a wide variety of responsibilities each day. They help prepare the art supplies for the upcoming classes, which may involve mixing paints or papier mache, wedging clay, and setting up the necessary art materials. Art Helpers deliver art supply lists to teachers each morning so that classes will be prepared with the appropriate items for class. Other responsibilities include cleaning and organizing materials, labeling and matting student artwork and assisting in the assembly of art showcases or displays.

Physical Education Helpers

Each year the physical education teacher recruits "gym helpers" from the fourth grade. These helpful students are typically among those who walk to and from school because they come to the building at 8:15 AM and assist the teacher by setting up equipment for daily P.E. classes. They also remain at school for about 15 minutes at the end of the day to help put the gym equipment away. Whenever possible, Gym Helpers also assist with repairing P.E. equipment.

TV Studio Crew

Under the direction of Mr. Hallett, our Librarian, two studio crews (a 4th and a 5th grade crew) will rotate as TV studio production staff to produce morning announcements, and special educational video productions throughout the school year.

Students who apply for a studio crew position must be available to work in the morning before buses arrive, be responsible to show up regularly and on time, be able to take direction, and be comfortable with, and excited about, learning and working with technology.

Jobs include script writers, camera operators, sound engineer, video engineer, floor manager, director, and on-air anchors.

Vocal Music Helpers

Music helper positions are somewhat informal and in a constant state of evolution. At present, some helpers assist moving furniture and setting up equipment and materials in the morning. Another group of helpers assist in returning the equipment and materials to the music room after chorus rehearsals. Another group of helpers assist in setting up the room and putting away instruments at the end of each day. The helpers are fifth or fourth graders who approach Mr. Allman with a strong willingness to help and who maintain a high level of reliability and good work habits. The helpers must also be tolerant of Mr. Allman's somewhat peculiar sense of humor and delight in things musical, and be willing to help Mr. Allman eat birthday cupcakes.
