Homework Policy

Riderwood has a policy on homework for sick students or those who miss school time due to family vacations. In an effort to minimize disruption to the ongoing classroom instructional program and to the office staff, no daily pick-up of missed assignments will be accommodated. Missed school work will be provided the day the student returns to school. The student will have two evenings to make up a missed day of school work.

If a student is absent longer than three consecutive school days, or the parent knows that the child is going to be absent for longer than three consecutive days due to illness, the parent can contact the teacher by note, or by leaving the teacher an e-mail message.  Work will be gathered up and sent to the office, at which time the parent will be contacted that the work is available for pick-up.”

Although it is in the best interests of a student’s instructional program to take family vacations during times when school is not in session, we realize that there will be times when they will be absent during scheduled school days. If this happens, students may keep a journal of their travels and experiences while they are gone. Work that they miss while on vacation will be gathered together by the homeroom teacher and given to the student upon their return to school. Depending on how many days of school were missed, this will be the number of days they will be given in which to make up the missed assignments.

Another Riderwood policy you need to be aware of is that parents should not bring their children back to school after hours to get materials needed for homework. We are working very hard to teach children responsibility. When given materials during the day students are guided through where to place them. They have agendas for recording their home assignments, and are given time and directions at the end of the day for getting together the materials needed for completing that evening’s work. By continuing to bring them back to school, you are communicating that they do not need to be responsible for these expectations. We hope you understand that we are trying to teach them a lifelong skill. Your support in this endeavor will be greatly appreciated.
